Officials: Pa. man helps woman escape fire, later dies in blaze
EAST MILLSBORO, Pa. — Fire officials say a 63-year-old man helped a woman escape from a southwestern Pennsylvania house fire but later died in the blaze.
Hiller Fire Company Chief Scott Dolan says the blaze broke out around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday in Luzerne Township. Fayette County Coroner Phillip Reilly identified the victim to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review as Harry Marks Jr.
Dolan says Marks woke the woman up, told her to get out of the house and went into another room. It’s unclear whether Marks was trying to extinguish the fire or rescue three cats that died in the blaze.
Marks’ body was found in a room toward the front of the house. Reilly says he died of smoke inhalation.
No other injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
