SUNBURY, Pa. — State prosecutors say a central Pennsylvania official stole more than $12,000 from a memorial scholarship fund.

Thirty-eight-year-old Justin Dunkelberger allegedly used some money he began stealing in April 2013 to fund his political campaign for Northumberland County prothonotary.

He was elected to the $61,000-a-year post in 2014 and became well-known for posting photos of people with overdue court fines on billboards.

Dunkelberger was arrested Wednesday and has not resigned. He declined comment, but says he hoped to issue a statement after meeting with his legal team on Thursday.

Attorney general’s investigators say Dunkelberger stole the money from a memorial and scholarship fund started in honor of Phil Lockcuff, a wrestling coach at Shilkellamy High School who died in 2013.

Authorities say Dunkelberger deposited 10 checks from the fund into his own band account.
