SOMERSET, Pa. — A Pennsylvania woman who broke into a neighbor’s apartment and stabbed a dog is going to prison.

The (Somerset) Daily American reports 24-year-old Virginia Campbell, of Somerset, was sentenced Monday to two to five years behind bars.

Authorities say Campbell called police in May and reported a break-in at her apartment. Her neighbors also found their home burglarized and their Pomeranian badly injured. Witnesses told police that Campbell acknowledged stabbing the dog and made up the story about her unit being burglarized to cover up the other burglary.

The 15-year-old Pomeranian was euthanized because of a severe knife injury to its head.

Campbell pleaded guilty to criminal trespass, theft and cruelty to animals.

Campbell said at her sentencing that she was embarrassed and sorry for what she had done.
