Roof collapses onto bird exhibit at eastern Pennsylvania zoo

The Associated Press

NORRISTOWN, Pa. — Officials say snow caused a zoo’s roof to collapse in eastern Pennsylvania.

Snow caused a steel mesh roof to collapse on the Birds of Paradise exhibit at Norristown’s Elmwood Park Zoo.

Workers arrived Sunday morning at Norristown’s Elmwood Park Zoo to find snow had caused the steel mesh roof to collapse on the Birds of Paradise exhibit.

The zoo posted photos on its Facebook page Monday showing the damage.

The exhibit is usually home to sun conures and canary-winged parakeets. The zoo says there were no birds in the exhibit at the time.

The zoo also sustained a torn gutter and broken asphalt.

The zoo has been closed while ice is removed and repairs begin. It is expected to reopen later this week.
