Breaking news: Rep. Schreiber loves his wife
People acquainted with state Rep. Kevin Schreiber know all about the two women in his life.
But only one of them was listening as he professed his love to her on live television at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia on Monday night.
And the whole thing was captured on a video that's now getting quite a bit of attention on Jezebel.com.
"Apparently, this blew up," Schreiber, D-York City, told The York Dispatch.
Sorry to burst your bubble, nattering nabobs of negativism, but Schreiber was on the phone with his wife, Jen.
Schreiber, who's an at-large delegate at this week's convention, said he was standing on the convention floor Monday night when his wife called him.
"She said, 'I recognize your hair — turn around,'" he reported. "That's when I said, 'I love you,' and I scratched my eyebrow."
He said scratching his eyebrow while on camera has been his nonverbal signal to his wife since his days as York City's economic development director. He repeated his declaration of love a couple more times while in the background of an MSNBC interview with U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri. On Tuesday, Jezebel.com posted the video and noted it was unclear to whom the state representative was speaking:
"After what appears to be a confirmation that the object of his affection is tuned to the right channel, he says one more time, 'I love you Jenny!' Or maybe it was Jenna! Or Jane or Jen or Jan! I have no idea what these two lovebirds call themselves, I just know they’re in love," Jezebel blogger Bobby Finger wrote.
It didn't take long for Schreiber to find out about the video.
"My phone started blowing up," he said. "Jen's Facebook page is blowing up too."
The politician with the golden curls admitted he was a bit embarrassed by the attention, but only a little.
"It's actually kind of cool," Schreiber said. "As my wife eloquently said ... in the mire of all the negative news, it's nice to take a second and talk about love."
While we're on the subject of love, let's talk about Schreiber's Other Woman.
Her name is Lucy, and she was watching TV when the loving exchange happened, he said. Lucy is the couple's Cavalier King Charles spaniel.
"Jen says she swears Lucy recognized me," Schreiber said.
He said that when he previously appeared on Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN), Lucy saw him on the TV screen and responded by barking. It's unclear whether she understands the eyebrow scratch.
Schreiber said he doesn't intend to give a repeat performance.
"I don't think so," he said. "This took care of my national debut of professing my love for my wife. ... And what better stage (than the convention)?"
Then, in a nod to the hometown crowd, he added that Philadelphia is "the second best city in Pennsylvania."
