The state Department of Agriculture conducts annual inspections of food-serving businesses to ensure public safety and safe food-handling practices. Schools are inspected twice per year, according to the Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratories.

Whether an establishment is considered compliant or non-compliant is the discretion of the inspector. There are, however, several violations for which inspectors should automatically consider establishments non-compliant. Called "critical violations," they include food temperature issues, employee hygiene and issues with chemicals and how they're handled.

Depending on the severity of the situation, inspectors and their supervisors could file citations or close an establishment.

Below is a list of establishments that were inspected May 6 through May 14:

OUT OF COMPLIANCE: 

Inspected May 7

Royal Farms, 101 Carlisle St., Hanover

o  Observed underside/inside area of F-Real milk shake unit a food contact surface, having old cake on food residue and static dust development and was not clean to sight and touch.

o  Observed wall corner located behind coffee units is cracked, chipping and is broken and in need of repair.

o  Observed flooring of utility room is extremely dirty, dusty, and in need of cleaning.

o  Observed the entire flooring on cooks line, rear stock and front areas of the food facility is extremely dirty, dusty, and in need of cleaning.

o  Observed tuna salad, hotdog, cheeseburger(x4) and chicken sandwiches(x3) and chicken pieces(x2) stored in customer self serve warmer and cold hold unit having expired dates/times at the time of inspection.

o  Observed boxes of food stored directly on the floor in rear stock area, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required.

o  Observed ceiling vents above food order area having a large accumulation of static dust development and in need of immediate cleaning.

o  The person in charge does not have adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection.

o  Observed side and bottom areas of fryers, prep tables and tray racks(cooking equipment) located on cooks line, is heavily soiled with encrusted grease and soil accumulation and in need of cleaning.

o  Observed the tops, sides and bottoms of numerous units are heavily soiled with static dust accumulation and in need of cleaning.

o  Observed bottom shelving of chicken/potato warmer, non-food contact surfaces not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil.

o  Observed the entire area of the three(3) compartment sink, refrigerator units(outside/inside) and handwashing sink, non-food contact surfaces not cleaned at a frequency to preclude a large accumulation of dirt and soil and in need of cleaning at this time.
