WellSpan York Hospital has received national recognition for its treatment of adult patients with acute heart or lung failure.

The hospital received the “Gold Level ELSO Award for Excellence in Life Support” from  Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO), an international nonprofit health care organization, according to a Thursday, Sept. 6, news release.

The award is for the hospital's use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a short-term, potentially life-saving technique that replaces the natural function of the heart or lungs.

The award "recognizes those centers that demonstrate an exceptional commitment to evidence-based processes and quality measures, staff training and continuing education, patient satisfaction and ongoing clinical care," the release states.

The release boasts that WellSpan York Hospital is the only hospital in southcentral Pennsylvania and one of only a handful of hospitals in the state to receive the award.

“This is a great honor for our patients, their families and our staff,” said Keith Noll, the hospital's president. “This designation validates our ongoing commitment to providing exceptional, life-saving cardiac and pulmonary care to our patients and our community. The expert physicians and staff of our ECMO program truly save lives, and we are very proud of our team’s work each and every day.”
