Southwestern Regional Police will be out with the community this weekend for a block party in Spring Grove.

The department said in a news release that officers will be attending the block party Saturday, Sept. 8.

The block party, which will have free games, food and activities, will be held 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Spring Ford Plaza.

Chief Greg Bean said the idea of the block party, now in its second year, is for the community to give back.

Bean said the department attended last year, the first year for the block party.

"It’s just as great way to get to know our residents," he said.

He said residents come out and ask questions, ranging from crime to neighborhoods.

The chief also said the department will be making child identification cards. The cards, he said, are license-like and have basic information and a picture of the child. Those cards are given to the child so they can have them in case they get lost.

“We’ve met some parents five and six times over, because as their child grows, they want an updated card,” he said.

Bean said the department typically does the identification cards a few times a year in different locations.

The chief said there will be two to three officers, some department volunteers and the department's chaplain in attendance Saturday.

"We pull out all the stops for the block party," he said.
