The Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad Heritage Village in Lower Chanceford Township was damaged by Friday's flooding, according to a village volunteer.

Walter Miller said the flooding that happened Friday, Aug. 31, was unusual.

He said heavy rain from earlier in the summer had caused some flooding but not like Friday's.

In a Facebook post Saturday, Sept. 1, the Ma and Pa Railroad Heritage Society wrote that the basement of the store in the village was "completely flooded" at the height of the flood and that the repair shop is in "total shambles."

The post also said the organization has received reports of the track being washed off the right of way in several locations.

"There is a great deal of erosion around the store and in the field, and our large sign with map of the village washed away," the post reads in part.

Miller recalled walking two miles of the train line and coming across three areas that had extremely heavy damage.

He said about 40 people came out on Monday, Sept. 3, to help repair some of the damage. Miller said the hope is for the village to be up and running, partially, by Saturday, Sept. 22, when Heritage Day will be held.

Miller said any help or donations would be appreciated. Donations can be sent to the organization on its website, www.maandparailroad.com.

“It’ll be a while before it's restored," he said.

The village's website said it will be closed until further notice.
