A passenger in a vehicle stopped Friday at a DUI checkpoint on the Interstate 83 business loop in York Township allegedly attempted to pull a gun on officers.

Markkel Davis, no age or address given, was being removed from the vehicle when he tried to pull a weapon from his waistband, state police said in a news release.

A trooper wrestled the suspect to the ground and seized a 9 mm pistol, police said.

The release states the northbound vehicle was stopped because officers smelled an odor of marijuana emanating from it, and drug paraphernalia was visible from outside. There were four occupants, and all were arrested, including a 16-year-old girl, according to police.

Davis was wanted on an outstanding warrant for vehicle theft out of Maryland; Alysia Thompson was taken into custody for a bench warrant out of York County; and the driver, Deshawn Thompson, was arrested for DUI of a controlled substance, the release states.

An officer searching the suspects’ vehicle became exposed to “heroin/fentanyl” and was treated at York Hospital, according to state police.

State police did not provide ages or addresses for any of the suspects or note what time the incident occurred.

Twelve drivers were arrested at the Friday, Aug. 31, sobriety checkpoint, including two who police said drove over the median to avoid the detail.

The checkpoint was staffed by troopers from York and Lancaster counties; officers from York Area Regional Police, West Manchester Township Police and York City Police; and York County Sheriff's Office deputies.
