Old restaurant building damaged in Newberry Twp. fire
A building that was home to a number of Newberry Township restaurants at one point was damaged during a two-alarm fire over the weekend, according to a fire official.
Newberry Township Fire Chief Gary Hatterer Jr. said the cause of the fire that damaged the facility Sunday, Aug. 12, is still under investigation.
Newberry Township Police said the building is located at 1875 Old Trail Road, and it used to be Bumber Bob's and Backwoods Bar and Grill.
According to the chief, a passer-by reported smoke coming from the building. When officials arrived, there was smoke coming from the back section of the building and from around the door.
He said there was a "high heat" condition in the building. Because of the size of the building, he upgraded the fire to a second alarm, which allowed for more manpower, he said.
The chief estimated it took firefighters about 45 minutes to get the fire under control. Hatterer said no one was inside the building during the fire.
He said the property had been for sale. Damaged in the fire were the restaurant items that were left inside.
“There was extreme heat damage inside that building," he said.
He said Newberry Township Police and a state police fire marshal are investigating the fire. He did not have an exact damage estimate.
The chief said firefighters were able to contain the fire to the first floor. He said it appears that the fire started in the middle section of the first floor.
No one was injured in the blaze.
Newberry Township Police is asking anyone with information on the incident to contact police at 717-854-5571.
