The president of The York Dispatch newspaper will receive a lifetime achievement award from the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association this fall.

The award "recognizes exceptional service and outstanding accomplishment spanning a career in journalism," according to a PNA news release.

"I'm deeply touched and so honored by the recognition from all these good people I've worked with through the years," David Martens said. "It's a privilege for me to be associated with fine journalists in these challenging times for journalists everywhere."

Martens, 76, became president of The York Dispatch Publishing Co. on Jan. 1, 2014, when former president Phil Buckner retired.

Martens previously spent about five years as publisher of the York Daily Record.

He is being recognized for his leadership and commitment to both the newspaper industry and to The York Dispatch, the release states.

Allison Frisch, whose last day as editor of The York Dispatch was Friday, Aug. 10, nominated Martens and noted he has been part of the journalism industry for more than 50 years.

"He has instilled a sense of great purpose in his staff at The York Dispatch," Frisch wrote. "He invests generously in journalism through hiring, training and working tirelessly to retain a strong bench of local journalists in an almost-unheard-of two-newspaper town."

'Unerring commitment': Frisch cited Martens' "unerring commitment to transparency and freedom of speech" and described him as a consummate newsman "and genuinely kind soul."

Martens is a lifelong champion of the First Amendment and its tenets, she said.

"Dave Martens' unwavering commitment to community watchdog journalism is an inspiration to The York Dispatch, and we’re thrilled that he’s receiving this well-deserved recognition from the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association," said Patrick DeLany, who is now The York Dispatch's top editor.

Martens is a longtime member of the PNA Foundation Board of Trustees and is currently its vice-chair, according to PNA.

The lifetime achievement award will be presented to him at the PNA's annual dinner on Thursday, Oct. 25, at the Nemacolin Resort in Farmington, Fayette County.
