Latinos Unidos of York is looking for the first Miss Latina of York County since 1982
For the first time in more than 35 years, young Latinas in York County are being given the opportunity to represent their community and officially be crowned as Miss Latina of York County.
The contest, sponsored by Latinos Unidos of York, a local Latino advocacy organization, will place the winner in the role of "ambassador for the Latino community," said organizer Delma Rivera, who is also a member of the organization.
The winner's duties will include representing the Latino community during First Friday Latino and other public events in the county, Rivera added.
A similar event, titled Hispanic Queen of York, debuted in 1982. However, a Latina representative for in the county hasn't been crowned since then.
"I always wanted to reinstate this program, and there's a lot of interest," Rivera said. "We don't want this to be a pageant, though, we just want them to serve as an ambassador for the Latino community."
Rivera said the program is starting small, as the organization wants to simply establish what is planned to be an annual event in the future.
However, the organization may be adding talent-based segments to the competition further down the road, she added.
For now, candidates will be chosen based on school performance, community engagement and pride in their Latino heritage, Rivera said.
To apply, applicants must be of Hispanic heritage, attend a high school in the county and have their parents' permission.
Applications must be completed by Friday, Aug. 10, and emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org or mailed to Delma Rivera at 6449 Reynolds Mill Road, Seven Valleys, Pennsylvania, 17360.
Finalists will be named during September's First Friday Latino celebration on Friday, Sept. 7, at CGA Law Firm, 135 N. George St.
The winner will be crowned at the York Fair on Saturday, Sept. 15, which is also the day when Hispanic Heritage Month begins.
