A lack of volunteers is threatening to put a stop to York City's annual St. Patrick's Day Parade.

The York St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee announced in a Monday, June 25, news release that the deadline for volunteer applications is July 15.

If the committee can't find enough volunteers, the tradition will come to an end.

The parade has been a part of the city's history for 35 years. The committee began sponsoring the parade 19 years ago, after York City discontinued the event.

Since then, the committee has relied on volunteers and sponsors to bring the parade to the streets of York.

"We have been searching for an organization, or a large enough group of individuals to carry on the parade and save it from ending, as the early members of this very committee did 19 years ago — to no avail," the release stated.

As a result, the 35th annual parade in March might have been the last.

The committee held a meeting in May with local businesses and city government officials to attempt to save the parade. However, "no such resolution has been reached," the release added.

"Parade Day always brings big crowds downtown, and many businesses, restaurants, pubs and other establishments benefit in many ways from The York St. Patrick’s Day Parade," according to the release. "We believe there is merit in saving this institution for the future for the good of the City and County of York, our businesses and our community."

City spokesman Philip Given said city residents and those from surrounding areas would suffer a "huge blow" if the parade were to be discontinued.

"Volunteer events are the heart of the city," he said. "But based on how large the event is, city residents and county locals alike would feel it."

Given added that he "doesn't see" the city being able to once again take over the role of running the parade. Therefore, volunteers are most likely the last resort for the parade's existence.

The committee needs to fill five key roles: overall coordination and general tasks; sponsorship management; fundraising management; graphic design; and marketing and promotion.

Those interested in any of the roles are urged to email yorkstpatparade@gmail.com by July 15.
