Navigate obstacles to provide disabled vets with service dogs
People can go to the pound later this month as a way to help connect disabled veterans with service dogs.
Crunch Fitness in York is holding an obstacle-course workout and a master pound workout class on Wednesday, June 27, at its 905 Loucks Road gym. That's in the commercial strip of Route 30, next to Old Country Buffet.
A $5 donation for each class is requested, and all proceeds go directly to Patriot Paws Service Dogs, according to Crunch Fitness. The event runs from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The Texas-based nonprofit organization provides service dogs at no cost to disabled American veterans, veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder and to others with mobile disabilities, according to its website, patriotpaws.org. Crunch Fitness locations across the country are raising money for Patriot Paws.
Patriot Paws has so far placed 130 dogs in 33 states, according to its website; it costs $34,000 to train one dog.
The York County Sheriff's Office is supporting the event, and all three of its K-9 officers — Dargo, Tommi and Hawk — will be at Crunch Fitness to greet people, according to Sgt. Shannon Martz of the sheriff's office.
Martz's 10-year-old daughter, Alexis, will be on hand as well, as will other vendors including Yashi's Yummies, according to Crunch Fitness.
Alexis makes purses out of old denim jeans and donates half of what she earns to service-dog organizations and shelters, her mom said. Half her profits — and all vendors' profits — from the Crunch Fitness event will go to Patriot Paws, Martz said.
The master pound fitness class starts at 5:45 p.m., and the "bad to the bone" obstacle course workout starts at 6:45 p.m. The second class got its name for resembling a dog obstacle course, according to organizers.
It's described as 30 minutes of running, jumping, bounding and crawling.
The event is open to the public, and people can reserve a spot in the classes by stopping into Crunch Fitness any time before June 27 to drop off their donations.
