The West York Borough Police Department is in possession of its newest asset to boost officer morale and keep them safe: a stuffed moose by the name of Mr. Moosey.

The moose has been traveling from police department to police department across the country since December 2016. The stuffed animal, making headlines with every stop, made it to West York on Tuesday, June 5.

The tradition began with a simple, kind gesture from a child in Towamencin Township, Montgomery County.

In 2016, Towamencin Police Officer James Gibbas pulled over Megan Brown, a mother of four, because of an expired tag. Gibbas opted not to give Brown a ticket.

The woman's young daughter thought the officer deserved a gift for his kindness, so she handed him a stuffed moose through the back window to keep him safe. Since then, Mr. Moosey has proven to be a special figure among police departments and their communities nationwide.

In West York, the officers and community have enjoyed his presence, said borough Police Chief Matt Millsaps.

"We've all enjoyed the opportunity to have Mr. Moosey around," he said. "He certainly has been a hit and seems to have a place not only with members of the criminal justice team and other first responders but also with members of the community."

Millsaps admitted that he and his team hadn't heard of Mr. Moosey until the moose was at their door, but he's seen positive results.

"This little moose is able to build bridges between people of all cultures across the country, and we're glad we took the opportunity to host him," he said.

The stuffed moose will be with the department until next week, Millsaps added.

West York is the last stop in the U.S. for Mr. Moosey before he begins his worldwide tour. The next stop, however, is kept a secret.

During his U.S. travels, he has visited several police departments nearby, the closest being the Baltimore Police Department in May.

As it continues outside the States, Mr. Moosey's journey can be followed at his Facebook page: "Mr. Moosey's World Tour."
