Students from around York County hopped on their bicycles Wednesday, May 9, to celebrate National Bike to School Day.
That included York City, where students from Lincoln Charter School rode from their 559 W. King St. campus to York City Hall.
Riding with them were York City Mayor Michael Helfrich, Chief of Staff Philip Given, York City Director of Public Works Chaz Green and Cary Hollis, community health specialist for the York City Bureau of Health.
Once at City Hall, Helfrich talked about bicycle safety with the schoolchildren, according to Given.
The mayor stressed the importance of using bicycle lanes, always wearing a helmet and other safety tips, Given said.
National Bike to School Day raises awareness of the need to create safer routes for bicyclists and pedestrians and emphasizes the importance of increasing the amount of kids' physical activity, according to a news release from Given.
Bike safety grant: Hellam Township Police held a bicycle safety program at Kreutz Creek Elementary School in the township Wednesday morning as part of a Safe Kids York grant, according to Staff Sgt. Drew Heistand.
"Really nice ones," he noted.
Heistand and Officer Josh Phillips brought the helmets to hand out when they taught the students about bike safety on National Bike to School Day, Heistand said.
National event: More than 2,500 schools in all 50 states were expected to participate, according to the nonprofit organization's website. The event is affiliated with National Walk to School Day.
