A natural-gas leak forced officials to briefly evacuate the Weis Market along Loucks Road in West Manchester Township, the York County 911 Center confirmed.

The outside gas leak was reported about 1:20 p.m. Friday, May 4, along Loucks Road between Ivan Road and Innovation Drive, according to the 911 Center.

About 2 p.m., a 911 supervisor confirmed the Weis Market at 1800 Roosevelt Ave. was evacuated because of the leak.

That portion of Loucks Road closed at the end of April for roadwork and will remain closed for about four months to everyone except local traffic, officials said.

It's also the portion of Loucks Road where Memorial Hospital is building its new facility.

About 2:45 p.m., West Manchester Fire Chief Clif Laughman said fire/rescue crews cleared the scene after Columbia Gas workers temporarily secured the ruptured gas line.

Line struck: The outdoor line was damaged when a York Excavating crew doing road construction hit the line while digging, he said.

Laughman said Weis Market was evacuated merely as a precaution, as were three homes closest to the leak. The Weis reopened within two hours, and residents were allowed to return to their homes.
