A 43-year-old Harrisburg woman died Wednesday, May 2, in a crash that happened as she tried to avoid a different crash scene, according to officials.

Terrena Carson was northbound in a Jeep that was reportedly struck by a tractor-trailer after she and the big rig tried to avoid a disabled vehicle from another crash just before 10 p.m. Wednesday, according to police.

The tractor-trailer struck her Jeep, causing her to swerve into a tow truck, officials said. After hitting the tow truck, her Jeep flipped over onto its side.

The crashes occurred near Exit 33, Yocumtown, according to the York County Coroner's Office, and Carson was declared dead about 10:45 p.m. after being transported to York Hospital.

Crashes: According to state police, the crash that killed Carson happened just after a different crash in the same location.

The first crash happened when a Ford F-250 driven by a Dover man struck the rear of a Dodge 1500 truck driven by a York man, causing the Ford to crash into a concrete median, officials said.

Police say the Ford was disabled and partially in the left lane on I-83, and the Dodge went to the right and came to rest along the guardrail. The three people in the Dodge were not injured, and the driver of the Ford suffered minor injuries from the crash, according to a news release from police.

Carson's crash happened shortly after. Police say a tractor-trailer driven by a Lackawanna County man was following Carson's Jeep Liberty in the left lane, approaching the scene of the first crash, and a Ford F-550 tow truck driven by another Lackawanna County man was in the right lane, the release states.

Police say both Carson's vehicle and the tractor-trailer tried to avoid the Ford that was partially in the left lane when the tractor-trailer hit Carson's vehicle, causing it to swerve to the right and strike the tow truck in the right lane.

The drivers of the tractor-trailer and the tow truck were not injured in the crash.

State police are investigating, and an autopsy has been scheduled for 8 a.m. Friday, May 4, at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown.
