Hanover big winner in high school theater showcase

Student actors from 15 area high schools performed scenes from their 2017-18 musical productions Sunday during the annual musical theater showcase Encore.

Hanover Senior High School was the big winner this year, taking the Best Overall Performance award for "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," while student Izzy Oropeza won Outstanding Female Performer for her role as Esmeralda.

Spring Grove Area High School was recognized with several awards for its production of "The Secret Garden." Lead male vocalists Vinny Beck and Seth Shields each were honored for Outstanding Male Performance. "The Secret Garden" also won Outstanding Production Number.

The York County School of Technology didn't win any awards for its production of "Little Shop of Horrors," but its students reached the Encore stage with their first-ever musical production.

The show was judged by Jill Campbell, the Learning Enrichment/ARTsmART Program specialist at State College Area High School; Melissa Mintzer, board member of the PA Thespians and the director of Thespian Troupe No. 274 at Penn Manor High School; and Marlene Thornton, drama director at Springfield Township High School in Erdenheim. The event was emceed by Bryan Tate, president of Building Unrestricted.
