Locals celebrate National Vietnam War Veterans Day
Local veterans gather to celebrate National Vietnam War Veterans Day
Dozens of York County Vietnam veterans and their families attended Thursday's second annual Vietnam Veterans Recognition Day ceremony, sponsored by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1032.
The ceremony was held Thursday, March 29, the same day as the National Vietnam War Veterans Day, a national holiday created after a multi-year campaign by retired Army 1st Sgt. Harold Redding, of North Codorus Township.
The event featured a keynote address by retired Sgt. Gene Schenk, who served in Vietnam with U.S. Special Forces, and music from the Central York Middle School Fife and Drum corps and David Bray.
All Vietnam veterans received a Vietnam Veteran pin and a resounding "Welcome Home" during the ceremony.
Veteran Harold Redding is working to have a National Day of Remembrance for Vietnam veterans.
