As the deadline approaches to file 2017 taxes, CASA has launched a bilingual tax service to help the Latino community understand how to file.

CASA has launched a bilingual tax service at its office in York City Hall.

CASA, a nonpartisan immigrant service organization with an office in York City Hall, launched the service Wednesday, Jan. 31. It will be made available to qualified CASA members until the 2018 tax deadline, April 17.

Fernanda Durand, a spokeswoman for the immigrant-rights group, said CASA members who earn more than $54,000 will be referred to another tax service.

In order to receive help, members must make an appointment, she said.

The need for tax service help is "critical," according to community member Catalina Ruiz.

"I'm so glad that CASA is doing this tax service because before it was very difficult to find a ... bilingual tax expert, and some of us had to go as far as Delaware to find someone who would file our taxes in our language,” Ruiz said.
