North York couple welcomes county's first baby of 2018
A North York couple welcomed York County’s first baby of 2018.
Leilani Smallwood — 7 pounds, 14½ ounces and 20¾ inches — arrived at 12:41 a.m. at York Hospital, according to hospital staff.
Leilani is the daughter of Alexus Eaton and Nassire Smallwood.
Eaton said she was admitted to the hospital at about 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, and was induced at about 12:30 p.m. It was more than 12 hours later when she gave birth to Leilani, who is her third child.
"We didn't know how long it was going to be," she said.
She said family members were taking bets on when the child would be born, and the girl's godmother was off by only a minute.
Eaton said she was in a lot of pain and wasn't thinking about the possibility of her daughter being the first child born in York County for the year.
"I kind of just wanted her out," she said.
Eaton said once Leilani was born, she was excited to find out that Leilani was the first baby born in York County for 2018.
Leilani is Smallwood's first child, Eaton said.
Eaton said they named their daughter Leilani because it means "heavenly flower" and was a name she always liked.
