This year, 1,802 children from about 950 families will receive a little more on Christmas than they might have otherwise.

Tables piled high with toys, organized by age, are brought into the gym at the Salvation Army of York in canvas laundry carts as employees work alongside volunteers to sort through donations of new toys as they are dropped off.

"We’re setting up our Christmas toy shop," said Maj. Dennis Camuti of the Salvation Army. "There will be hundreds of families coming in, and we’re grateful for the donations made today."

The Salvation Army, 50 E. King St., will distribute toys and Christmas Cheer Food Boxes on Dec. 19 and 20.

Members of the York County Licensed Beverage Association, which is a group of independent tavern owners in York County, stopped by early Wednesday afternoon to drop off their donation. The association participates in various fundraisers throughout the year.

"This year we chose to purchase toys," said association member Danette Shultz. "We purchased about $1,600 worth of toys for the Salvation Army, which will then be distributed to families in York County."

"The need for toys is great," Camuti added. "It’s over and above what we needed to raise last year."

The families receiving gifts through the Angel Tree program have already been chosen and have been given appointment times to do their "shopping" in the toy shop on Dec. 19 and 20.

Donations are always welcome, as are volunteers. For more information about volunteering, call volunteer coordinator Michelle Harris at 717-848-2364.
