Police: New Freedom woman struck, killed by hit-run tractor-trailer
A 53-year-old New Freedom woman was killed on Interstate 83 in Maryland when she was struck by a tractor-trailer and dragged about 500 feet, according to Maryland State Police.
Nancy Bupp Carter was standing by the driver-side door of her disabled car on the right shoulder of I-83 southbound near Western Run Road when she was struck and dragged about 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, police said.
That's in the Cockeysville area of Baltimore County, according to police.
Carter was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The Maryland Medical Examiner's Office said the cause and manner of her death have not yet been ruled on, and that the case remains under investigation.
A passenger in the car told police he was on the phone at the time and didn't get a description of the hit-and-run vehicle, according to police.
Evidence from the hit-and-run vehicle was collected at the scene, and troopers said it's consistent with a tractor-trailer or similar vehicle.
The hit-and-run rig should have damage to its right front bumper and headlight area, according to police.
Maryland state troopers in other areas and local police were alerted to be on the lookout for the tractor-trailer.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Maryland State Police at 410-780-2700.
