22nd annual Hanover Chili Cook Off is heating up
The 22nd Annual Hanover Chili Cook Off will be Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017.
When asked what he'll serve up differently this year at the 22nd annual Hanover Chili Cook Off, 3 Hogs BBQ co-owner Matt Albright said he's considering a few eccentric approaches.
Albright has regularly been victorious year-to-year at the event, which helped create a pathway to open 3 Hogs BBQ restaurant in Hanover. A second barbecue restaurant of its kind recently opened in Spring Grove.
Hanover will be re-named Chili City on Sunday, Sept. 3, according to the Hanover Chili Cook Off planning committee. An anticipated 50 competitors are expected at the Good Field Complex at 70 N. Forney Ave.
Last year's event raised $65,000, which went to selected local charities.
Among the nonprofits to receive donated funds are: The HART Center, Guthrie Memorial Library, Friends of Codorus State Park, York County SPCA, Boy Scout Troop 107, Hanover Aerial Fire Truck Fund, Penn Township Emergency Medical Services, New Hope Ministries in Hanover and the Salvation Army Hanover unit.
Nikki Walters, a 3 Hogs BBQ employee, said a few weeks before the event, sweat equity is a must to win area bragging rights. Last year, 850 gallons of chili was cooked.
Walters said the family-friendly event is worth attending — and not only for the chili. There also is beer, live music and barbecue, as well as activities for kids.
"It's a lot of fun food all over," event director John Loose said. "We'll have some good barbecue stands, Bricker's fries, ice cream from Rita's and a couple of other folks."
Parking spaces are limited this year, he said. Two shuttle buses will operate from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at locations in north and south Hanover.
The event begins at 11 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. Tickets are $8.50 in advance and $10 at the gate. Children 12 and younger and active military with identification are free.
No coolers, alcohol, tents or pets will be allowed on the event grounds. A valid photo identification is required, according to the committee.
