A gun owner really shot himself in the foot last week — but in a figurative sense only.

State police said the owner of a scoped Savage Arms hunting rifle left the firearm behind at the state Game Commission shooting range in the 1800 block of Old York Road in Warrington Township. The range is part of State Game Lands 242.

The rifle was found about 7:45 p.m. Thursday, according to police.

It was in a black plastic case, which was on a bench, said Trooper Brent Miller, a state police spokesman.

The rifle wasn't loaded, he said, although there were a couple of boxes of ammunition with it.

"It's pretty rare" for someone to mistakenly leave behind a firearm, according to Miller.

It's also not a crime, he said.

The rifle's owner should have its serial number ready to provide to police, to prove he or she is the rightful owner, Miller said.

If you own the rifle or you know who does, call Trooper Justin Kurtz at the Loganville barracks of state police at 717-428-1011.
