Two people hurt in Fawn Twp. house fire
A man suffered burns and a youth inhaled smoke Thursday during a Fawn Township apartment house fire, officials said.
Fire crews were called to 683-687 Graceton Road about 12:20 p.m. for the blaze and brought it under control in about a half hour, according to Assistant Fire Chief Jimmy Williams of Fawn Grove's Citizens Volunteer Fire Co.
A man who lived in the first-floor apartment suffered burns and was taken to York Hospital, Williams said. His condition wasn't immediately available.
A male juvenile who lived in the third-floor attic apartment suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to a Maryland hospital for treatment, he said.
No other injuries were reported, the assistant chief said.
A total of seven residents — four adults and three juveniles — from the three apartments are displaced and being assisted by the York-Adams Chapter of the American Red Cross, according to Williams. The Red Cross also provided canteen service to the 30 or so firefighters who responded, he said.
Total loss: The house is a total loss, according to Williams. A damage estimate was not immediately available.
There is smoke and water damage throughout the apartment house and fire damage in the first-floor apartment, and firefighters had to cut a hole in the roof to ventilate smoke, Williams said.
A state police fire marshal is investigating, he confirmed. Williams said he expects it will be a lengthy investigation.
Firefighters arrived at the scene "within minutes" with about 4,000 gallons of water, according to Williams, who said less than 1,000 gallons was needed to douse the flames.
No one trapped: There were initial reports of people trapped inside, but that wasn't the case, he said.
After extinguishing the blaze, fire crews had to do extensive overhaul to make sure there was no fire in any of the walls, Williams said.
Assisting Fawn Grove firefighters at the scene were crews from Airville, Stewartstown, Delta-Cardiff and Felton, plus Maryland units from Harford County, Whiteford, Norrisville and Darlington, Williams said.
Also, he said, Craley firefighters filled in for Fawn Grove crews.
