Marshals search for sexual predator who might be in Pa.
Updated 7:40 p.m. Friday: Ernest Reigh was arrested friday in Burlington, Vermont, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
The U.S. Marshals Service is asking Pennsylvanians to be on the lookout for a sexual predator who vanished from Florida after being released from prison.
Ernest Eugene Reigh, 65, was last seen in Fort Pierce, Florida. He was released from St. Lucie County Jail on March 1, according to the marshals service, which is offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information leading to his capture.
Deputy U.S. Marshal Christopher Crotty told The York Dispatch that Reigh is originally from the Altoona area and still has family there.
But Crotty noted Reigh could be anywhere in Pennsylvania. He also could be in North Carolina, according to the marshals service.
Reigh sexually assaulted a girl who was less than 12 years old in St. Lucie County in 1995, according to the marshals service. She was a middle-school student at the time.
Reigh worked as an assistant in the mid-1990s at the St. Lucie County Jail but was suspended in March 1995 after the middle school student told investigators he had forced her to perform sexual acts for about two years, a marshals service news release states.
Marshals said that in 1996, Reigh was convicted of lewd and lascivious acts and sentenced to state prison. A month later he admitted he had lied during trial when he said he was falsely accused. Around that time he also admitted to selling a machine gun for $500 prior to his arrest. He was found guilty of perjury, adding an additional year to his sentence.
Dropped at bus stop: After his release from prison, he was dropped off at a Greyhound bus stop in Fort Pierce, after which he failed to report to his federal probation officer and failed to register as a Megan's law offender, the release states.
"Reigh is considered a wanted absconded sexual predator with a history of carrying firearms," the release states.
He is white, bald, has blue eyes and is about 5-feet-6.
In addition to the up-to $2,000 reward offered by the marshals service, more reward money might also be available, according to the release.
Anyone with information about Reigh’s whereabouts is urged to call Crotty at 305-710-7395, or call marshals service Fugitive Task Force Officer John Brady at 954-707-2457.
