Brick walls and charred debris are all that remain of a South George Street garage after flames quickly ripped through it Monday night.

Fire crews responded about 6:40 p.m. to the 700 block of Cleveland Avenue for a structure fire on a property on the 700 block of South George Street, said York City Fire Chief David Michaels.

York City firefighters were able to get the flames under control after 15 minutes, but there wasn’t much to be salvaged by that point, Michaels said.

However, the crews were able to save the adjacent garage, Michaels said.

By 7:30 p.m., York City firefighters were cleaning up the site and preparing to return to the station.

Michaels said it was too early to provide an estimate for the value of the damages, but aside from a small charcoal grill and a lawn mower, the garage appeared to be mostly empty.

It also was  too early to determine a cause for the fire, and the cause will likely remain undetermined until the property owner can be reached, as no one was inside the residence on the property at the time of the incident, Michaels said.

Fire officials will work to locate the property owner to see what was in the garage at the time of the fire, Michaels said.
