Fire destroys Dover Twp. home, displaces four
- A fire destroyed a Dover Township home on Tuesday afternoon.
- Two adults and two children were displaced because of the blaze.
A fire destroyed a Dover Township home and displaced four residents Tuesday afternoon, according to a fire official.
Barry Emig, of the Dover Township Fire Department, who was acting as the public information officer for the incident, said the residents felt a "movement" in the building and saw something indicating a fire was happening.
"At this point, we believe it might have started in the basement," he said.
The call for the fire at 4290 Admire Road came in about 4:20 p.m.
Emig said it took about 30 to 45 minutes for firefighters to have the situation under control. At less than half an hour after the fire was called in, almost nothing from the structure, a split-level home, remained.
He estimated about seven nearby fire departments assisted in the blaze.
Emig said the home was considered a "total loss."
"There's nothing salvaged," he said.
Two adults and two young children were displaced, he said. Emig said the tenants were renters of the home. He said it was too early to tell what the cause of the fire was and that a fire marshal has been called to determine the cause.
Fire: Emig said the fire was "fully involved" when crews arrived. Smoke from the fire could be seen as far as two miles away from the home.
Rick Snyder, who lives across the street, said he saw the residents exiting the house shortly after the fire started.
Snyder said the fire claimed the building quickly.
"Within 10 minutes, the whole thing almost collapsed," he said.
Emergency crews had blocked off about a half mile of the road to deal with the fire. Shortly before 6 p.m., the chimney collapsed, leaving little standing.
Crews were using construction vehicles to clear the debris by about 6:30 p.m.
The Red Cross is assisting those displaced in the blaze.
