York County's director of communications will be moving on to a new job in South Carolina after six years in the position.

Carl Lindquist's departure was announced at the weekly county commissioners' meeting Wednesday, when the commissioners awarded him a gold coin.

Lindquist said he will be working for a health care organization near Myrtle Beach, and the move is being made to be closer to family. His last day will be Sept. 20.

Lindquist is a former York Dispatch reporter, and Commissioner Chris Reilly joked that he was hired because he was "such a damn good reporter."

Lindquist said he developed "a healthy dose of cynicism" about government during his six years as a reporter, but he found those issues didn't exist in York County.

"I couldn't imagine working with a better organization," he said.

County solicitor Glenn Smith said they would look to fill Lindquist's position as soon as possible, and that he and county administrator Mark Derr would do their best to fulfill those duties until someone is hired.
