Nice weather expected for holiday weekend in York
- The National Weather Services says "plenty of sunshine" for the weekend
- Scattered thunderstorms will occur on Friday afternoon
- There's a possibility of some light scattered showers on Monday
After some thunderstorms expected throughout the York County area on Friday afternoon and evening, the National Weather Service is forecasting "plenty of sunshine" for the holiday weekend.
There may also be some light, scattered showers on Monday, according to meteorologist Barry Lambert.
York County and the surrounding area are under a severe thunderstorm watch until 10 p.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service.
Rain: Lambert said that some showers and thunderstorms are expected between 4 and 10 p.m. on Friday in the York area. There is also a possibility of high gusts of wind and hail, though he said those circumstances are very localized, so some thunderstorms may have them while others may not.
"Keep abreast with your app and access to radar or your local media," Lambert said. "Just keep abreast that some of these storms could produce lightning, which is the biggest threat to your outdoor activities."
The thunderstorms are being triggered by a cold front, which will lift the warmer air for the colder and drier air to move in for the weekend, according to Lambert.
There is also a chance of showers on July Fourth, though Lambert stressed that at this point it is too early to tell exactly the nature of the storms. As of right now, the forecast predicts a 40 percent chance of rain, particularly in the afternoon. Lambert said that the showers will likely be scattered and short, lasting perhaps five to 10 minutes.
A comfortable weekend: Saturday and Sunday are expected to make for a "comfortable weekend," Lambert said. Saturday is forecasted to have a high of 80 degrees and sunny, with Sunday landing at 82 degrees and partly sunny. Evenings will make for good sleeping weather too, with lows ranging in the high 50s and low 60s throughout the entire weekend.
Independence Day is supposed to stay around 83 degrees as well. Overall, Lambert said these conditions are mild for the weekend.
"There's nothing too much," Lambert said. "It's a very comfortable weekend relative to what we can have during the middle of summer."
Lambert said that throughout the weekend it's important people stay hydrated.
"It's still warm, so drink plenty of water and have fun," Lambert said.
