Changes are coming to a stretch of South Queen Street in York Township that should make driving a little less stressful, or at least less congested, for motorists.

The township is receiving $250,000, part of $12 million allocated statewide this week, to upgrade traffic signals at three intersections as part of the state Department of Transportation’s Green Light-Go program.

Two of the intersections are near Queensgate Towne Center and are heavily used by drivers daily.

The signals at the intersections of South Queen Street and Springwood Road and Hollywood Drive and Springwood Road, which are near the shopping center, and South Queen Street and Tyler Run Road will be upgraded to more modern interactive traffic lights, according to PennDOT.

The signals' timing changes based on traffic patterns, allowing for better traffic flow, according to PennDOT.

In a separate project, Springwood Road near its intersection with South Queen Street will be widened to allow an extra lane.

The Green Light-Go program is funded by the 2013 transportation spending plan, Act 89, which also increased funding for roadwork through a higher gas tax and an increase in vehicle fees.

Township share: The state's $251,175 allocation to York Township will cover half the cost of the upgrades, and the township has to make up the difference.

The township budgeted for the expense, said township manager Elizabeth Heathcote.

The planned widening of Springwood Road will not make a huge dent in the township's budget, either. In fact, it won't cost the township anything.

When Queensgate Towne Center underwent a major revamp about seven years ago, the developer agreed to widen the road to allow for a right turn lane onto South Queen Street, Heathcote said.

That work, as well as the signal upgrades, is expected to get underway next year.
