Penn Township police have released the identity of the man killed in an early morning wreck along Blooming Grove Road Saturday.

Police in Philadelphia shot and killed the driver of a minivan who they say drove toward them when they attempted to stop the vehicle. File photo

Jason Gilbert, 31, of Gettysburg, died instantly after losing control of his motorcycle while taking a curve, Penn Township Police Chief Jim Laughlin said. An officer happened to be in the area at the time of the incident and witnessed the crash.

"We basically have a one-vehicle accident," Laughlin said. "He was operating a motorcycle at a high rate of speed. He failed to negotiate a right-hand curve in the roadway."

The wreck took place in the 700 block of Blooming Grove Road, also known as Route 216, just east of Grandview Road at 2:09 a.m.

Officers were on scene, Laughlin said, but were not pursuing Gilbert when he crashed. An officer parked in the area saw Gilbert speed by him and then watched as he lost control and crashed.

"He left the roadway to the left, struck a tree and some stuff on a person's property," the chief said. "The officer viewed and heard the crash."

An investigation is underway as officers await the results of an autopsy, Laughlin said. The results of a toxicology report will determine whether or not alcohol or some other substance contributed to the wreck, he added.
