Owners of unlicensed dogs beware: A state dog warden may be knocking on your door next month.

York County Treasurer Barb Bair, whose office oversees issues dog licenses in the county, said officials with the state Department of Agriculture will be canvassing parts of the county looking for noncompliant dog owners sometime in April.

"You do need to prove you have a license for your dog," she said.

If not, owners face a $300 fine.

State law requires that all dogs 3 months old or older be licensed, and wardens have canvassed the county the past few years to ensure compliance.

Cost: Licenses range in price from $8.50 for an annual license to $51.50 for a lifetime one. The cost drops to $6.50 yearly, or $31.50 for a lifetime license, for a dog that is spayed or neutered, and discounts are offered to older pet owners or those with a disability. In order to qualify for a lifetime license, a dog must be microchipped or tattooed.

Licenses can be purchased online, by mail or at the treasurer's office, 28 E. Market St. in York City. They can also be purchased at 17 locations throughout the county.

Replacement lifetime license tags can also be obtained at the office. For owners who have moved or have new contact information, they should contact the treasurer's office with their new information.
