LITTLESTOWN, Pa. — Authorities say a fire in central Pennsylvania killed a man and displaced 19 other people, almost half of them children.

Officials in Adams County said the blaze was reported in the borough of Littlestown just before midnight Saturday. Arriving fire crews reported heavy smoke, and the flames spread to eight apartment units before they were brought under control.

The county coroner's office said 55-year-old Walter Thrift III was found dead at the scene. An autopsy is planned to determine the cause of death.

The Red Cross chapter in central Pennsylvania said it was providing temporary lodging for 10 adults and nine children displaced by the blaze.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
