WellSpan partnership expands access to advanced cancer treatment
For people who have been diagnosed with cancer, clinical trials can offer a new hope for overcoming their diseases.
Thanks to a new collaboration between WellSpan Health and the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins, cancer patients in York County will have expanded access to these potentially life-saving clinical trials, according to a news release.
For rare and complex cancer cases, the expansion also allows WellSpan patients in York, Adams, Lancaster and Lebanon counties to access advanced treatment technologies at the Kimmel Cancer Center in Baltimore.
Specialists from Johns Hopkins, who are renowned for treating some of the most complex cancer cases, will provide WellSpan cancer physicians with second-opinion services, according to the release.
“Our goal is to make sure our patients have access to the expertise they need, whether it’s through the coordinated and compassionate care of our WellSpan oncology specialists or it’s through expanded clinical trials at Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center,” WellSpan Health’s vice president of oncology services Douglas Arbittier said in the release.
In return for expanded access to the Kimmel Cancer Center’s specialists and advanced technology, WellSpan Health will award cancer research grants to the center on a competitive basis, according to the release.
The collaboration is the latest partnership between WellSpan and Johns Hopkins. Pediatric surgeons from Johns Hopkins have been seeing York County patients on a regular basis since September.
“We have worked with WellSpan’s strong regional cancer program for many years, and we are enthusiastic about formalizing an agreement that will give WellSpan’s clinicians and patients wider access to the unique expertise of the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center team and clinical trials,” said Kenneth Cohen, the center’s director of strategic planning and integration.
