Two local hospitals have been recognized for providing an outstanding patient experience in 2016.

OSS Health and WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital, both in York Township, received Guardian of Excellence Awards from Press Ganey. The health analytics firm collects benchmark data for more than 26,000 health-care clients. Additionally, OSS Health received a Pinnacle of Excellence award, earned by the top three performers in each category monitored by Press Ganey.

Both health-care providers were among seven in Pennsylvania to receive the Guardian of Excellence Award, presented at an annual conference in Orlando, Florida, earlier this month. It honors hospitals that reached the 95th percentile for patient experience, employee or physician engagement or clinical quality performance.

Only two hospitals in Pennsylvania, OSS Health in York and Paoli Hospital in Chester County, received the Pinnacle of Excellence Award, said OSS Health spokeswoman Angie Hartman. That award recognizes the top three clients per category who have maintained consistently high levels of excellence over three years in patient experience, employee engagement, physician engagement or clinical quality performance.

Hartman said the orthopedic hospital has scored in the top 1 percent of hospitals for the past three years in patient satisfaction. It also was recognized by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services as a five-star hospital.

“It is a great honor, and it is our second year in a row to achieve this,” Hartman stated in an email. “We were one of only two hospitals in Pennsylvania to achieve this award, so that makes us the only hospital in Pennsylvania to achieve (both).”

WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital offers advanced orthopedic, spine and neurological surgery procedures as well as both inpatient and specialized outpatient rehabilitation services.

In September, WellSpan Health announced its 4-year-old surgery and rehabilitation hospital scored top marks from Becker’s Hospital Review. The trade publication named WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital one of 51 hospitals with the fastest aid, No. 4 of 45 hospitals for top nurse-patient communications and among the top five Pennsylvania hospitals patients would recommend.

President Barbara Yarrish called the recognition “gratifying” in a news release. Yarrish is also the senior vice president of post-acute services for WellSpan Health.

“I am convinced this is the result of a mindset for us, a passion around the work that we do,” she said. “This is the result of diligent work occurring at our hospital every single day as we continuously commit ourselves to providing the best care possible to our patients.”
