The Children’s Home of York is taking on the issue of problem gambling and needs the help of York County college students to get the message out.

The winner of the "Design the Sign" contest will have their design featured on a billboard on Interstate 83.

The family-improvement agency is holding a design contest for students of HACC York, Penn State York and York College.

The winning design will be plastered on a billboard along Interstate 83 starting in mid-April, according to Children’s Home of York prevention specialist Ginia Bishop.

The design event comes just in time for National Problem Gambling Awareness Month, something Bishop says is a problem that can affect all members of a family, especially children.

“We see how students can become compulsive with gaming,” Bishop said.

She added that paid fantasy football leagues are a common form of gambling that could turn out to be a costly problem for families.

Last year, the Children’s Home of York won grants from the state Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs and the York/Adams Drug and Alcohol Commission to provide preventative problem gambling services to adolescents and senior citizens in York County.

Bishop said problem gambling is more pervasive than people think, which made it an ideal challenge for the nonprofit’s prevention team to tackle.

“We just don’t think about it, but it’s just as real as any other addiction,” she said. "Gambling problems can happen to anyone."

Design the sign: Students at HACC York, Penn State York and York College are encouraged to submit their artwork for the design challenge.

The winner of the contest will be announced at the Problem Gambling Awareness Awards ceremony, starting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, at the Children's Home of York gymnasium, 77 Shoe House Road in Hellam Township.

The first-place winner will receive $300 and have their design featured on a billboard along Interstate 83 North. There will be cash prizes for second- and third-place winners.
