The principal of Sinking Springs Elementary School has resigned after nearly five years leading the school.

The Central York school board unanimously approved the resignation of Joel C. Gugino at its regular monthly meeting on Monday, Nov. 20, according to district spokeswoman Julie Randall Romig.

Gugino became principal of Sinking Springs Elementary in December 2012, according to school board minutes.

His resignation will be effective Jan. 30 upon conclusion of a medical leave, according to the motion surrounding Gugino’s resignation on the board agenda.

No formal reason was given for Gugino's resignation.

Parents, staff and faculty were notified of the change after the board vote, according to the district spokeswoman.

In turn, the Central York school board unanimously approved the transfer of Heather Dick to replace Gugino as principal at Sinking Springs effective Dec. 4, according to Romig.

Dick is leaving her role as assistant principal at Hayshire Elementary School, and with the change will come a pay raise: Her current salary of nearly $93,000 will jump to $106,000 annually upon her move to Sinking Springs.

Central York School District Superintendent Michael Snell declined comment on the matter.
