After years on the market without a buyer, the former Chanceford Elementary School in the Red Lion Area School District is going on the auction block.

The property, located at 33 Muddy Creek Forks Road, has been mostly vacant since 2009 when the school closed and made way for the Larry Macaluso Elementary School, which opened at the start of the 2009-10 school year.

In the eight years since the school’s closure, the property has been rented out occasionally by different entities. Recently, the building’s cafeteria became home for a local summer robotics camp, according to Red Lion Superintendent Scott Deisley.

In a resolution passed unanimously Thursday night by the Red Lion school board, the district will work with John M. Hess Auction Service to conduct the auction.

Deisley said the property had been on the market for years under Rock Commercial Real Estate without a buyer.

“There’s not a large market for closed elementary schools,” he said.

Deisley added the district does not have a need for the school since it could accommodate a surge of students without it.

“We’re good for the foreseeable future,” he said.
