The York YWCA is among 66 schools, community organizations, municipalities and law enforcement agencies in Pennsylvania that will receive a grant from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board to help curb underage drinking.

Of 99 organizations that applied, 66 were awarded grants totaling more than $2.3 million, according to a news release.

The YWCA was the only entity in York County and one of 17 community organizations statewide that received a two-year grant from the PLCB. It was awarded $36,120.

The organization was given the grant to support the Project Towards No Drug Abuse (TND), a program to assist at-risk high school students in York City, according to a PLCB list outlining the recipients.

TND is an evidence-based University of Southern California project aimed at preventing childhood drug and alcohol abuse, according to YWCA York grant writer Heather Maneval.

The original USC study surveyed more than 2,000 students who took the course and found alcohol and hard drug use among the cohort of mostly high school students went down by more than 30 percent and 50 percent, respectively.

The program's success prompted the York YWCA to adopt the approach for the program, which will serve mostly York City students, according to Maneval.

TND will be run under YWCA's Quantum Opportunities after-school program, which boasts a 100 percent graduation and college acceptance rate for participating students, according to Maneval.

Maneval added that the TND program will hold 12 sessions at the school district every semester with at least 50 students involved over the next two years.

According to the 2015 Pennsylvania Youth Survey, underage drinking rates in York County align with alarming figures for the rest of the state, with a drinking rate ranging from 33 percent among eighth-graders to more than 52 percent among 10th-graders.

YWCA York is working with the York City School District to determine the first group of students who will take part in the project, according to Maneval.
