Individual school's Pennsylvania System of School Assessment exam scores were released Sept. 29, and for the second year in a row schools were subjected to the more rigorous Common Core standards that were enacted during the May 2015 tests.

Schools across the county varied on whether their student's scores improved or declined. Red Lion Area School District saw improvement in English language arts scores, but math scores had mixed results. On the math exam, more students scored as advanced in 2016, but more students also scored as below basic compared with 2015 scores. Averages for the district were found using scores from each school within the district.

The York Dispatch was unable to reach anyone from Red Lion for comment.

In 2016, the district's advanced scores jumped to 20.8 percent of students compared with 18.4 percent in 2015 on the ELA exam. There was a slight decrease in the number of students in the district who were considered proficient in ELA from 49.9 percent of students in 2015 to 47.5 percent in 2016.

In 2016, 25.3 percent of students scored as basic on the ELA exam, up from 24.1 percent in 2015. Finally, students who scored below basic on the ELA exam decreased between the two years. In 2015, 7.5 percent of students in the district were considered below basic compared with 6.5 percent in 2016.

For the math PSSA exam, there was an increase in the percentage of students who scored as advanced on the exam from 16.2 percent in 2015 to 21.6 percent in 2016. In 2016, 34 percent of students scored as proficient in ELA, while there were 35.8 percent in 2015.

Less students scored as basic on the exam in 2016 with 27.7 percent of students receiving that score, compared with 32.5 percent in 2015. Finally, there was a slight increase in students who scored as below basic in 2016 on the math PSSA exam. There were 16.8 percent of students who achieved that score in 2016, up from 15.5 percent in 2015.

Within the district, North Hopewell-Winterstown Elementary had the most students score as advanced on the ELA exam and had the second most students achieve the same score on the math exam, falling behind Pleasant View Elementary by .1 percent. In 2016 at Hopewell-Winterstown, 26.5 percent of students in the school were considered advanced in ELA, up from 19 percent in 2015.

However, there were 7.7 percent of students in the school who scored below basic on the same exam, up from 4.2 percent in 2015. In math, 16.3 percent of North Hopewell-Winterstown students were considered advanced, with Pleasant View Elementary having 26.4 percent of students achieve that same score this year.

Exactly the same number of students were considered below basic in math at North Hopewell-Winterstown, 9.6 percent, while at Pleasant View there was an increase from 13.5 percent in 2015 to 17.4 percent in 2016.
