Individual schools' Pennsylvania System of School Assessment exam scores were released Sept. 29, and for the second year in a row schools were subjected to the more rigorous common-core standards that were enacted during the May 2015 tests.

Schools across York County varied on whether student scores improved or declined. Eastern York School District saw improvement in both English language arts scores and math scores. Averages for the district were found using scores for each school within the district.

Eastern York Superintendent Darla Pianowski did not return multiple requests for comment on the district's PSSA exam scores.

The school district saw a major jump in scores for the ELA exam in 2016. In 2015, 16.5 percent of students scored advanced on the exam, while in 2016 that number jumped to 23.6 percent. In 2016, 47.0 percent of students were considered proficient in ELA compared to 50.9 percent the year before, but that's because more students moved into the advanced area of scoring.

There were 23.9 percent of students in the district who scored basic on the 2016 exam, down from 26.4 percent in 2015. Students scoring below basic in ELA were down in 2016 as well, from 6.3 percent on the 2015 PSSA exam to 5.6 percent this year.

There was improvement in the district on the math exam, as well. In 2015, 17.6 percent of students scored advanced on the math exam, but this increased in 2016 to 22.6 percent. There was another increase in the number of students who were considered proficient in math, from 32.4 percent in 2015 to 34.6 percent in 2016.

Fewer students scored basic on the math PSSA exam in 2016, at 26.6 percent, than in 2015, at 31.9 percent. Finally, the number of students scoring below basic was down. There were 16.2 percent of students in the district who scored below basic in math in 2016, while 18.2 percent of students achieved the same score in 2015.

Kreutz Creek Elementary School saw some of the biggest jumps in the district in students who scored advanced on both PSSA exams. In 2015, only 4.1 percent of students at the elementary school scored advanced in the subject, but this jumped to 17.5 percent in 2016. The number of students who scored below basic on the exam were lower, too. Only 5.3 percent of students achieved that score in 2016 compared to 7 percent of students in 2015.

The elementary school also saw an increase in math scores between the two years. In 2015, 16.5 percent of students in the school were considered advanced in math, but this jumped to 21.1 percent in 2016. As with ELA scores, fewer students scored below basic in 2016. In 2015, 15.9 percent of students in the school were considered below basic in math, compared to 12.3 percent this past year.
