The Northeastern school board on Monday dismissed Superintendent Shawn Minnich, who had been suspended since June after losing his teaching certificate due to an aggravated-assault charge related to an incident involving his estranged wife.

Acting Superintendent Stacey Sidle said eight board members voted for the dismissal, with one member abstaining. She did not state which member abstained and would not comment on the decision.

According to the school board agenda, the decision is a result of the "unchanged and indefinite status of the Order of the Pennsylvania Professional Standards and Practices Commission."

The school board initially continued to support Minnich after he was charged last December, refusing to suspend him or comment on the matter until a June 2 school board meeting, where the board suspended him without pay.

The decision came after a ruling by the Professional Standards and Practices Commission, which is an arm of the Department of Education. The ruling suspended Minnich's teaching certificate in a 6-3 ruling in May.

Minnich is accused of bursting into the East Manchester Township home of his estranged wife, Kathy Minnich, on Dec. 4, 2015, and physically assaulting her boyfriend. He was charged with aggravated assault, burglary, making terroristic threats, simple assault, criminal trespass, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and harassment.

Sidle confirmed that the school district will begin searching for a new superintendent but declined to comment further. Sidle became acting superintendent during the same June 2 board meeting in which Minnich was suspended. Formerly, Sidle was the assistant superintendent.

Minnich's trial is scheduled for Oct. 30. Minnich's attorney previously asked a judge to throw out his aggravated-assault charge, the only felony charge against the former superintendent, but this motion was denied.
