The Northern York County school board on Thursday will host a public hearing to discuss upcoming renovation and construction efforts at Wellsville Elementary School.

The Act 34 hearing a public hearing required under Pennsylvania School Code when either the construction of new school buildings or substantial additions to existing school buildings are planned  is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Wellsville Elementary School cafeteria.

The purpose of the hearing is to present the plans for the renovation and additions to the elementary school to residents, taxpayers, and employees, as well as provide them with a public forum to express their opinions regarding the project.

The renovation and construction project, which has a price tag of approximately $9.2 million, looks to double the elementary school's classrooms from six to 12 and add a gymnasium as well as music and art spaces. Also included in the plan are new parent/student drop off areas.

The timeline, submitted by project architect Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates during a school board in December, calls for the district to begin collecting bids in August and September with construction tentatively scheduled to begin in spring of 2017, said district spokeswoman Vangie Unti. The project is expected to be complete by July 2018, Unti said.

The regularly scheduled school board meeting is scheduled to follow the hearing at 7:00 p.m., also in the elementary school cafeteria.
