The Central York School District has invited the community to learn about its implementation of a "mass customized learning" format within its classrooms.

There are three upcoming forums for parents and guardians interested in learning about the new classroom setting that has emerged as a success in the high school. They are scheduled to take place on March 24, April 20 and May 18 — with a morning session at 10 a.m. and an evening session at 6 p.m. on all three days — in the board room of the Educational Service Center

"Mass customized learning" doesn’t involve a specific plan, but rather speaks to the fact that children learn at all different rates. This format of education allows students to delve into topics at their own pace and pick the lessons they feel they need more help with.

This learning format is designed to focus not only on academia but on communication and the tools students need to have success in career, college and as a citizen.

At Central York High School, the Apollo program – which combines English, social studies and art – was rolled out for the fist time at the beginning of the year. In the program, students are responsible for completing three projects over the course of the semester. While the topics of the projects are up to the students, they also must cover certain themes and certain points outlined on a rubric.

Students have created documentaries, written songs and put together an art gallery fundraiser as a part of the program.

The younger grade levels also have a sort of lunch menu of lesson plans – also available in Apollo – and students are able to pick out different topics to focus on.
