Red Lion HS to host state student council conference
Red Lion Area Senior High School has won the bid to host the 2017 Pennsylvania Association of Student Councils State Conference, which will bring thousands of student council members and facilitators together under the Red Lion roof.
Red Lion students earlier this year addressed the district's school board and earned their approval before they traveled to Altoona, where they were required to win enough votes to secure the bid for the annual event. Students in grades eight through 10 last month made a presentation to more than 50 people, participated in a question and answer session with the selection board, and in the end, beat out North Penn High School to win the honor of hosting the conference.
The Pennsylvania Association of Student Councils operates under the mission of developing young leaders and assisting their advisers so students, in turn, will work to improve themselves, their schools and their communities. Some of the ways the state association works toward that is through scholarships, networking opportunities and bringing those young leaders and their mentors together through conferences, held on district and statewide levels.
The statewide conference is the association's biggest event of the year, and the Red Lion Student Council has been charged with the task of organizing it for 2017. Students have already begun the planning process as well as fundraising to cover some of the costs of the event.
The conference typically offers workshops led by students, teachers and experts or outside professionals. Students planning the event are also encouraged to include some type of information swap or sharing of ideas, according to the association's handbook.
The Red Lion Student Council acts as liaison between students and administration and is made up of students in grades 9-12 who together make up a variety of committees. The student council has a hand in planning a variety of activities ranging from dances to blood drives to spirit week.
