All York County schools to close again Tuesday

Even though the extreme winter weather subsided late Saturday night, all York County school districts were closed Monday and will be shuttered again Tuesday.

It's no longer snowing, but York County superintendents agreed the safety of their students and employees depends on more than just the current weather. While the historic blizzard has moved on from York County, the mountains of snow left in its wake have made for slippery roads, and left many people still trying to dig their way out of their homes

York Suburban Superintendent Shelly Merkle said her administration first considers whether or not the buildings are safe, and they always assess the risk of power outages and any damage that may have been caused by a storm. The district then considers whether or not it is safe to travel to and from school.

Merkle also pointed out in a letter posted on the district's website that not all districts in York County will be forced to close at the same time because each is unique.

For example, students travelling to schools in Red Lion do so on a lot of smaller roads, said Red Lion Area School District Superintendent Scott Deisley

"We have many miles of back roads and dirt roads," Deisley said. "Even though the main arteries are clear, these roads pose a huge safety concern for our drivers and students. We still have many people who cannot get out of their driveways."

West York Superintendent Emilie Lonardi said that once fall turns to winter, watching the weather is last thing she does before she goes to bed and the first thing she does when she wakes up in the morning. She also keeps in touch with forecasters at AccuWeather who are able to field any of her questions.

"It is an extremely stressful aspect of the job of a superintendent because safety is paramount for our children and staff," she said. "This includes bus riders, walkers, teenage drivers and staff, especially those who are coming from homes outside the district."
